What To Expect At a Photo Session

Everything in a photo shoot is very informal. A typical session will start with a meet and greet, which allows a sufficient amount of time for your pet to get to know the photographer and their surroundings. There will then be lots of play time and treats all while capturing those precious moments on camera. It may take a few tries to get your dog posed and in the correct position. This is very typical, especially if your dog is at a new place and the reason why a session takes about an hour. Sessions may consists of a range of photographs including close ups of wet noses, posed portraits, actions shots and environmental portraits of you and your pet.  Expect to have lots of fun!

Why should someone consider a photoshoot/portrait of their pet?

Think about the memories you have with your pets, the happy howls and purring when you get home from work, the wet kisses and warm snuggles when you least expect, and the comfort they give with each and every hug. They are as much family as anyone and a forever portrait in their forever home will always make you smile.

What tips/information should someone know going into a pet photoshoot?

Pets have their own idea of how a session is going to go, so plan on bringing extra patience for your pet’s new modeling gig. I like to photograph pets where they are comfortable for this reason, whether that is at your home or their favorite park.  It is always good to have some of your pet’s favorite treats or toys handy to get their attention and practicing their best tricks for the big day always helps!

What should my dog wear?

If you choose to accessorize your dog, the simpler the better. Maybe try a bandana, a bow or a special collar. Overall, if your dog isn’t used to wearing it, I would suggest to leave it out.

What should I bring to the photo shoot?

I will have some treats and toys for the duration of the shoot. If your dog has a special diet, please bring along some of their own treats. Having a portable water dish and some water is also necessary if our photo session is on location somewhere other than the studio or your home.

What precautions are you taking with Covid-19?

If you or anyone in your immediate family are experiencing symptoms, I ask that you reschedule your photo shoot for a later date when everyone involved is healthy.

What if there is bad weather?

I will be in contact with you before the shoot to make sure that the weather is cooperating. If there is inclement weather, we will reschedule and find a time that works for both of us.

Do you have a studio?

Yes, I have a full service studio for portraits.

What if my dog is high energy and/or hasn’t taken obedience classes?

No need to worry whether you dog received all A’s in obedience class. I have photographed every age of dog from puppy to senior with varying levels of obedience. We will have lots of time to photograph and I have lots of tricks to get them to look at the camera. It does help if your dog is a bit tired before their shoot. I suggest taking them for a long walk before the start of the photo session. If your dog is food motivated, treats will help in capturing those portraits.

What if my dog is very timid?

If your pet is on the shy side, I may suggest to do a photo shoot in a familiar place to your pet. If that is not a possibility, we may just need extra time for your pet to warm up to the camera.

What do I do if my dog is a runner and can’t be off leash during a photo session?

I actually photograph most of the dogs with a leash attached and edit the photos after to remove it. I would rather your dog stay safe rather than let them run free. To make retouching easier, I recommend you to choose a thinner or natural colored leash.

Can I print the pictures on my own?

If you purchase the high-res files you can print them anywhere you'd like. Since quality is very important to me I will provide a guide with vendors that I trust.

How do I book a photo session?

To book a session, fill out this form. After an initial consultation I will send an electronic contract and an invoice for the session fee to secure the date.

How long does it take until I get to see the photographs?

Portraits are delivered via an online gallery 2-3 weeks after your session.

How can I pay you?

I accept online payments via credit/debit cards and cash.

Do you photograph any other pets besides dogs?

Although dogs are my main business, I have photographed many other species of animals.

How did you get into pet photography?

I started volunteering at the Humane Society of West Michigan, taking happy, bright, and colorful photographs in hopes of increasing all the pet’s chances for a speedy adoption. It was right around then that I decided to combine my love for animals and Masters Degree in photography to began specializing in pets.
